Happy endings

Monkey

This is our favorite part: The happily ever after. We love to hear from people who have adopted Rocket Dogs and hear all about their new lives together. Here are just some of our success stories.

Three years ago my beloved Dalmatian, Jazz, passed away. He and I spent 11 years running, traveling, living, and loving with each other. I matured as a person through my twenties with that dog, so it was very difficult to move on after his death. Two years of mourning passed slowly, but I finally began to emerge from that dark place toward the light of the possibility of getting a new dog. I spent a year watching dog adoption sites, visiting shelters, etc., but I just never felt a connection with any pooch I met. I began to think I would never find another Jazz.

Then in January 2007, my husband and I returned home at 2:00 a.m. after a night out with friends. We climbed into bed, and I brought my laptop with me for some late night Web surfing. By chance, or destiny, I decided to search through the adoptable dogs at Rocket Dog Rescue. A little guy named Junior stood out immediately. Without hesitation, I wrote an email to inquire as to his availability and to set up a meeting. To my surprise (I thought he was too perfect to still be homeless), his foster mom wrote back. The following Monday night, my husband and I made the drive to San Francisco and met Junior. When I bent to greet him, he placed his little paws on my knees and began wagging his nubby. I looked at my husband and told him Junior was the one. We just happened to be the first people to write about this recently rescued puppy, so we got each other that week!

In the year that we’ve spent getting to know this little guy, a lot has happened to him and us. First, we renamed him Monkey (fitting his silliness better). Second, he started daycare and became a favorite of both his caretakers and doggie pals (he’s extraordinarily loveable). Then we got pregnant and moved to a house with a yard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Monkey was ecstatic and quickly took to ruling his new yard. Also, he began playing ball with a passion. He has excelled beyond any dog ballplayer’s wildest dreams – he could seriously play for the Giants (well, he can’t bat the ball, but he’d easily take to the outfield). Monkey also spent 40 weeks protecting and warming his mommy’s new baby. When our little Claudia was born, he further proved his greatness by becoming the most careful, gentle, and protective big brother a little sister could want. We’ve spent the past five months getting back in shape together and raising our new family member. Monkey has been there every step of the way; he’s pulled us out for walks/runs daily and has already taught Claudia a few new words like woof, bow wow, and grrr.

So needless to say, after a rocky ending to a past love, my family and I have wonderfully returned to a magical life with a dog. I could never thank Rocket Dog Rescue enough for all it does and for rescuing little Monkey. Not only has this organization changed/saved the lives of hundreds of pooches, but it hass bettered the lives of many humans as well. Heartfelt thanks!

Monty

He is doing excellent. His cast has come off, his leg is fine,and he has stopped going in the house, which is great for us. :) Also, him and Seymour (the cat) are best friends, wrestling in the house and chasing each other all over the place. It's perhaps one of the cutest things I have ever seen. We couldn't have asked for a better little friend to join our home. He has become so much more playful than when we first got him. He loves to see his friends at the park and play tug of war with his stuffed elephant baby. Thanks again for helping us find our little angel! Fairin

It always ended the same... either the distance was too far, or her looks were too intimidating. Little did they know - they were missing out on the most phenomenal dog ever born! Once I began having to remind myself that Fairin was a foster dog and not OUR dog, I realized that maybe it was time for a change... maybe the reason Fairin hadn't gone anywhere was because she wasn't meant to :-) We were proud to officially adopt Fairin into our family... and grateful for the oppurtunity to share our lives with such an amazing girl. Here is a picture of Fairin and our 4.5 month old son... seeing how gentle and loving she is with him, only makes me love her all the more!"

Lucky

Dear Rocket Dog,

I'm writing to send you an update on Lucky the little
mix we adopted in September. We first met Lucky at your mobile adoption in the Castro, you had a bunch of
dogs you had just rescued from a hoarder and we wanted to help and decided to foster. We met Lucky and he was so small and sweet, you can tell he'd been through a lot. The poor little guy was in bad shape! He had almost no fur, he had worms, and needed surgery. To top it off, he is also blind in one eye and he was so shy and scared of people and loud noises.

After taking him home, we fell in love with him immediately and decided to adopt him, not just foster. After he realized we loved him and he could trust us he really opened up. Seven months later, he's a whole different dog. He's back to a healthy weight, with a beautiful new coat of white fur. He loves to nap, cuddle, loves to play with his teddy bear, he loves kisses, and he really loves treats. He's still scared of loud noises and when people walk behind him or move too fast, but he's starting to open up to strangers that he meets at Dolores Park. He also just got a new little sister named Emmie from Wonder Dog rescue and he enjoys playing with her too! We just wanted to say thanks you guys for a wonderful addition to our family. We love Lucky so much and have you to thank for bringing him to us!

Rudy

A few weeks after the second of my two beloved ancient Rottweiler mixes died last October, I began window shopping for another dog. I kept hearing good things about Rocket Dog but didn't make the plunge until immediately after the New Year when I contacted Kay , inquiring about Grizz. Though it was pouring rain at the time of our scheduled outdoor meeting, Kay, Jessica and Grizz braved the weather to meet me at Octavia Green. Grizz is a charmer - full of typical lab enthusiasm and affection, but I had concerns about taking on another large dog after struggling to carry my big old dogs as their health failed and managed to resist him. Kay was a great sport about getting soaked for naught. She simply took my application, asked me to describe my ideal dog and promised to be in touch.

Nine days later I picked up a phone message from Kay suggesting that I drive up to the ranch to look at Rudy, a seven month old diminutive rottweiler mix. I called Digger and she graciously agreed to introduce me the next morning. As soon as I parked my truck, a beatiful black and tan pup came out wildly wagging his almost monkey-length tail. A short walk confirmed it: Rudy - now Hanu (after Hanuman, the Hindu = monkey god) was absolutely the right dog for me. Hanu is now busy
exploring his new urban home, charming the neighbors, flirting with each and every passerby and gleefully chasing every dog he meets who won't chase him first. Full of puppy energy, he eagerly joins in on chores (though we do differ greatly as to how to make a bed ...) as well as long walks and seaside or parkland romps. l could not be more grateful to the shelter volunteer and two Rocket Dog volunteers who saved and sheltered this dog along his way home.

Carmella

We called Rocket Rescue to ask about a sweet faced girl named
 Carmella. According to the shelter Carmella was good with cats, so we
 decided to take a chance and foster her. When we picked Carmella up
 from Pali, she was a bag of bones. The poor girl had been starved
 nearly to death, her tail was broken, much of her fur was missing, and the poor thing had clearly had puppies recently. She looked so hurt, yet her eyes were clear and loving and trusting. We took her home.
 
 The first couple of weeks were tough. Poor Carmella could not control her bladder or her bowl: we had to take up every rug in the house. As she began to eat and feel better she discovered that the liked to chew...on anything: sneakers, slippers, remote controls, cell phones, Frisbees, clothing she drags out of the closet, textbooks and three of my favorite pens. It seemed every time we turned around she had found something else to mangle. Mind you, we bought her toys
 and chew sticks, and she loves them dearly...but evidently nothing
 tastes as sweet as a stolen cell phone.
 
Today Carmella is 20 pounds heavier (from healthy food, not cell phones), muscular, and truly beautiful. Even with no formal training she is a joy to walk and we can command her from a distance. When she stands tall and proud in our back yard she looks like a true terrier, and when she runs and plays she looks like a frog riding jet-pack (i.e. typical playful pit bull) Her poor adorable crooked tail (which can't be fixed) wags and wags when either my wife or I approach her or call her name. We sleep with this 60 pound blast furnace, and we wake up to an onslaught of dog kisses.
 
 Carmella is an angel, a gift, a joy, and a blessing. We could never part with her, so we adopted her. Thank you Rocket Dog!!!

Lucky

I feel lucky now! I have a permanent sanctuary home with a big sister Rocket Dog named Lady and a Dad to cuddle with. I’m going to get treatment for my lymphoma and feel really hopeful. Thank you to Julia and Kay and Pali and everybody at Rocket Dog Rescue for helping me. Life looks good.

Lady

Lady (left) with little brother Lucky, a fellow Rocket Dog. Lady “Red” Rogers has only been with me for three weeks but we already seem like long time friends. Her personality keeps coming out more every day just like the red coat that gives her the second name.

After my beloved shepherd-mix Ruby died this year at sixteen I knew that I wanted to get another one of these Granny dogs. Lady is a ten year old chow mix and just as sweet and mellow as I hoped for. She
loves her slow solo walks with me but also enjoys being with her new little brother Lucky.

Lady’s amazing calm and sweet nature is what made me decide that I could take in another dog so soon. Lucky has lymphoma (that we are treating) and needed a sanctuary home. Lady is a good influence on Lucky and – who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks – has learned from him how to lift her leg outside (but only on walks with him, when she wants to show him who’s boss, because the rest of the time she’s all lady).

Lady is a classic example of why every dog should be rescued and given a chance and why we need to fight for humane conditions for animals. The volunteers who found her lying in a ditch, covered with mud, thought she might be dead. When she blinked an eye, they realized she was alive; but, she was scared and very depressed. Now look at her; a happy sweet soul who loves kids and has lost her shyness around other dogs.

I am so happy to have her sweet joy in my life. Much thanks to Rusty (and DJ) for fostering her and to Kay and Pali and everybody at Rocket Dog Rescue for all the great work they do saving these beautiful dogs. Paws up!

Shelley

Hi Rocket Doggers,

Just wanted to pass along a picture of Shelley I took when my mom came
over to visit last weekend. She's doing really well and my mom simply
loves her. Her personality has really come out since we've got her.
When we first picked her up after being rescued she was covered in
fleas, depressed, and cowering in the corner. She has become quite a
happy camper and loves to follow my mom around and go on long walks with her. I just wanted to thank all of you for rescuing Shelley in the first place and let you all know that she is doing wonderfully. Enjoy the pic! Erin

Rocco

We rescued Rocco from Rocket Dog Rescue in May 2007. At first we didn’t think that we were going to be able to keep him but in the end it worked out.

Rescuing Rocco is one of the best things we have done. He is a huge part of our family and we're so very lucky to have him. Rocco isfantastic and a complete joy. He has such an outgoing personality and loves to get all the attention he can get (he always lets everyone in the room know he is aroundJ). He has so much love to giveand is a complete snuggler. He has some protection issues (which is fairly normal for his breed) but we are slowly working on that. We are so very happy that we did get to take Rocco home. Thank you Flora and Rocket Dog…you guys are great! Thanks Again, Teresa :)

 

Max

We haven't spoken to you in a while and we wanted to let you know how
our little boy is doing. You know how hard it has been with him. He was not responsive to us for the longest time and at one point we were overloaded with it all. It has taken a long time for Max to trust us and relax with us. We have surrounded him with love and affection and prayed he would learn to trust us.

It's only been since July that he has started to play with us, but he
has made incredibly strides since December when we adopted him. He sleeps
on our bed now (new house with no stairs - he hates stairs!) and likes to
play before he goes to sleep. He loves to snuggle up and bury his nose under
you while you sleep. He's a bed hog too! :)

He plays quite a lot now. He has his own blanket on the sofa and he gets
a good, long walk every day. If we can't walk him he gets to go to the dog
park for at least an hour and he plays really hard. He's quite the strong
boy now and asserts himself with other dogs, instead of being scared all the
time. He knows our voices and is quite obedient for an untrained dog!

He still jumps at any sudden movement or loud sounds but he's more
comfortable with us around. He still favors women over men but I don't think
he sees us as men anymore. We are his humans, part of his pack.

He's such a good dog in so many ways. We know we are blessed to have him
and we give him all the love he deserves. It's sometimes hard to not know
what he's been through but at least we feel the connection with him now.
He's part of our family.

I thought you would be tickled to learn that he is being loved to pieces
and is definitely our spoilt little boy. He's still a trim 48 lbs and is
very energetic, and he's finally found his home.

I've attached a couple of pictures for you to enjoy! You'll see his ears
are a big part of his expression. If only you could see how dynamic that
makes him when he gets animated! Still, we are grateful to Rocket Dog for
this opportunity.

Bailey

To tell you the truth when we first got Bailey we really didn't think it was going to work out. She was nothing like our other dog, and it was quite difficult in the beginning. She was not easy, and we really didn't know if it was the right fit. Well I am so glad that I
listened to everybody at Rocket Dog Rescue because we could not
imagine our lives without her. She is an amazing dog that is constantly making us laugh. She and Guinness love each other so much, and they are basically inseparable. We leave them home alone almost all day, and they never have to be separated. We are really working on her leash pulling, but it is obvious that she wants to learn. I honestly think that she knew that we were thinking about returning her and that is the reason she was acting up. The minute we decided to work through everything she started settling down and listening to us. We love Bailey more than anything and are glad that she is a part of our family. Her goofy smile keeps us laughing.

Bo

Hey Rocket Dog Rescue, so i know its been some time but Cliff and I wanted to let you know how Bo is doing. He has definitely made himself at home. That same day we adopted him we went out and got him his own bed, leash, collar, and doggie treats. For Halloween Bo was a bubble bee, and helped me pass out candy. He and Cody, our other rescue dog, are best buds and I feel so comfortable knowing they have each other when Cliff and I are not there. He gets along great with all the other dogs in our family, and goes over for slumber parties at my in laws often. He's so laid back, but Cliff gets him and Cody ruffed up and the three of them will run crazy through the house jumping on furniture and wrestling. Bo follows me unconditionally. If I get up just to go use the bathroom, he's right there with me. He loves to go bye bye, he's not a very good walker, but we're working on that. He kisses on his terms and greets me with them when I get home. He definitely has some personality, and fits in with our family great. Jesse

We met Jesse, a 2 ½ year old white malti-poo, 3 months ago; he was under-weight, nervous, and down-on-his luck. It’s hard to believe such a cute little dog had such a rough start in life. My husband and I wanted to give him a new “forever home”, but we had to get approval from Lola, our Cairn Terrier. During the “home visit” Lola calmly watched as Jesse ate her food and played with her toys. Within a few minutes, Jesse and Lola were tumbling around and playing together like long-lost friends; it was obviously the “Lola” stamp of approval. After some amazingly speedy paperwork, he came to live with us a few days later. As Jesse gradually gained weight, he also re-gained his strength and self-confidence. Jesse and Lola have become best buddies, and Jesse clearly seems secure and happy in his new home; the picture says it all. Columbo

We've adopted Columbo (formerly named Mr. Pea body) 3 years ago, and Mochi (formerly named Black Betty) early this year. Columbo is a bit of a grump, so he had some hard times with Mochi when she first came to live with us, but they get along just fine now.

Mochi is a smart dog and loves hanging out with us all the time. She's very affectionate, and super friendly to everyone. She had a heart condition when we adopted her, but she shows no sign of illness. The medication we give her
is totaly affordable, we're very happy to see her doing well.

Columbo is also very smart (almost human like), he doesn't like strangers, but likes hanging out with us (sometimes) and loves hanging out by himself. He used
to come walk with me to work every morning and hang out all day under my desk while I worked. He's getting old now and can't walk as far these days,
but LOVES eating and sleeping!

They are both super sweet, and we're so happy we 've adopted them!! We just love old dogs!! Thank you Rocket dog rescue!! Here are some photos of them hanging out.

Chai Bella and Billy Vito

Billy Vito (on the left with packs) and Chai Bella (right) were both adopted from Rocket Dog Rescue.   Chai, a pit bull mix, came first in May of 2003. At three months old she was on her way to the euthanasia room at ACC when Pali literally snatched her from the hands of death and set her on course for The Duchy of Choo. Four years later she is the sweetest most goofiest dog on the planet. Absolutely full of character, she is kind, loyal, loves mostly eveyone (even the gopher that is digging up my yard) and quite smart too. Her favorite things are hiking in the mountains, snuggling and giving love, her little soccer ball, and snacks. Bubby, one of her thousand nicknames, will wiggle uncontrolably for a Newmans Own Organic dog treat.

A possible mix of greyhound and cattle dog, "Cousin" Vito, (as
he's known to those who love him) came to stay in January of 2005.
Originally he was to be just a foster, as I had just lost my Luna  (the
dog love of my life) and wasn't sure I was ready for another . . .but
Billy had other ideas. He had been abandoned and left to die after
eating a box of rat poison. While regaining his health with RDR, he
received such good training that I hardly had to work with him at all.
He came with all his commands pretty well learned, and basically just
had to "settle in" Now at three years old and firmly established in The Duchy, he is an enthusiastic nut case who loves his ball, hiking, his ball, Chai, his
ball, and his ball. If you have a ball, he will be your friend. If you
have a "chuck-it" he will worship you.

Hudson & Kristen

My name is Kristen Hopkins. My family and I adopted a puppy from you about 3 years ago. I (and I speak for my whole family) wanted to let you know how much we love our dog, Hudson, and what an amazing dog he turned out to be. He is the sweetest, most lovable dog on earth! Best Friends

In June of 2003 we adopted Tessa (Welsh Corgi / Chihuahua Mix) from Rocket Dog Rescue.  After being foster parents for Rocket Dog Rescue for awhile my daughter Jennifer brought Tessa to stay with us.  I just fell in love with her!  She had been in the Hearing Dog Program and somehow ended up at the S.F. ASPC.  She was 2 years old and pretty scared to be around other dogs and men.  One year later we purchased Mr. Miyagi ( Pug Puppy) from a breeder.  I was concerned that Tessa would never adjust to him.  Finally months down the road they became friends.  Today they are best of buddies.  Tessa has over come her shyness and fear of men and other dogs.  We play daily at the dog parks with even BIG dogs.  She is a real sweet girl and I want to thank Rocket Dog Rescue for all you do for our four legged friends.  Donation sent.

Stinky

Stinky (formerly Timone) has been a great addition to my family. He drives me crazy, he makes me laugh. He sings along when Bob Dylan plays the harmonica and hides his treats in the most obvious places. He is equally happy on a long hike or deep under a blanket. Just like me. He’s really not even that stinky. Thanks to Julia for her persistent advertising of this older little guy. He came along at what turned out to be the best possible time. Lisa Larkworthy

Bingo

My Bink (AKA "Bingo") was relieved of his body on Friday, June 1 at 4:30 p.m.  He was suffering with a worsening neurological disorder, was not absorbing any nutrition and, long ago, lost control of a few things, including his bowels and his bladder.  After talking with the vet on Friday at 4:00, I discovered that, by standing with his head in the corner and by going through tight spaces (under chairs, behind the couch, etc.), Bink was trying to steady himself as relief from vertigo.  Even though he had ice cream and donuts every day, for over two months, he continued to waste away.
  
I held him and cried when he started to fall asleep from the first shot, the sedative.  Then I held him and cried more when he got the final shot.  It was one of the three saddest moments in my life.
  
Any solace lies in the fact that Bingo was truly and unconditionally loved for over 2 years and I have been assured, by fellow earthly beings, that there is a heaven and that he's a young pup again, frolicking with all of the Rocket Dog Rescue alumni who had already entered that dimension.  Bink was a good boy who died in the arms of someone who loved him will mourn him and will never, ever, forget him. Thanks to all of you, on behalf of my Bink, for your work and your support.   Max Green Vallejo Calif.

Sweetie

Just wanted to send you a pic to let you know that Lola (formerly named Sweetie) is doing well. She completed basic doggie training last fall and is doing really well. We live across the hall from another Rocket Dog. He's a Shar pei mix named Fido, they are best friends. I ran into a women from Rocket Dog today, who originally rescued her from Bakersfield, so I though that I would send an update your way. Thanks again for rescuing her in the first place!! We love her very much.

 

Nona

Dear Pali, First of all, I would like to thank you for providing us the opportunity to adopt Nona. She is truly a delight. After having to have Odie (our pit, lab and ridgeback mix - 16 years old) put down a few weeks ago, our home has been empty. It has been very hard on all of us, in particular me. I sorely missed my gentle and loyal friend and companion.

Lillian and Keith, Jenny and yourself were all so helpful in finding Nona a good home. She is indeed a gentle soul and fits right in with our family. She has already become the star attraction around here and loves to be loved. She sleeps on our bed with us as Odie used to do. In fact, last night she jumped on the bed around nine thirty and wagged her tail as if to say" come on, it's time for bed". I guess I'll be going to bed earlier. She is wonderful around people especially my grandchildren. She has already brought so much joy back into our household and she is much fun to be with. I walk her daily and have been slowly introducing her into this more rural setting. We have taken up to the MMWD lakes, the Marin County Civic Center, and downtown San Anselmo. She loves to be around us and the feeling is mutual. I am enclosing a few pictures and will send more soon. Again, my hats off to Rocket Rescue and all the staff and volunteers.You are doing a tremendous job by saving these wonderful animals and we commend each and everyone of you.

Honey

We can't express enough how thankful Franco and I are for having the opportunity to adopt Honey. It became apparent that 'Honey' came with emotional scars. Caring for 'Honey' would be a tremendous challenge, but we were both convinced that a loving and nuturing home and her strong spirit would help heal her painful past.

When we first brought her home, Honey was frightened and unsure about her surroundings. For days she would spend most of her time hiding curled up behind our couch. She refused to come come out to eat. Not only would she retreat to her safe place any chance she got, but she would also have a difficult time walking over tiled or wood flooring. Often times we would carry her to one room to the other to ease her fears. We knew we had to take baby steps with her.

Two years have passed and each day has been a blessing in our lives. Looking back we can clearly see how much her personality has blossomed. 'Honey' loves the outdoors. She enjoys hiking, camping, swimming, visits to the Dog Park and hanging out with family members. Squirrels also keep her quite entertained.

With patience, trust and love on all of our parts, we are proud to say we have a happy, healthy, vibrant and lovable addition to our family. Thank you Rocket Dog Rescue and Pali for rescuing her. She will continue to bring us joy and we can never thank you enough!!!!

Rocket

When my old Jack Russell Terrier, Rosie, died about a year ago, I decided that was it for dogs for me.  How could any dog take Rosie's place, and how could I go through losing a friend like that again?  Then an old enemy came back to visit - the colon cancer I thought I had vanquished several years ago.  While my treatment is not so bad, it does involve some sitting on the sofa, and some effort to not dwell on maybes and what-ifs. I realized that maybe what I needed was the companionship and distraction of a little dog.  I started looking at shelters and rescue organizations, and met quite a few great dogs, but none could hold a candle to Rosie.  I even thought (just for a second) about getting a puppy from a breeder, as many of the rescue dogs I met had behavior problems that seemed too much for a non-disciplinarian, dog-spoiler like me.  Then one day I opened Craigslist Pets, and there was Rocket (then known as Jackie O), with her funny ears and sweet face.  It was one of those, when you see her, you'll know she's the one, moments.  When my daughter and I met her, she barked at us. When I brought her home, she shivered on my lap all the way and bit me (with intent!) within the first few minutes of being home.  I wondered if I had chosen the right dog by using my heart instead of my head.  But it didn't take long to know that that scared little dog was really a super affectionate, wildly happy, adorable, smart, easy to train, perfect little friend.  She already sits and stays (Rosie would NEVER have done such a wussy thing!), sleeps in her crate, potties outside, chews only toys (and hands a little bit).  She still barks at strangers, (and the phone and someone walking around upstairs...) but within a few minutes she is kissing them.  I am so happy with her; on my chemo days we snuggle together on the sofa and she looks adoringly at me... and vice versa. What was I thinking that a new dog would be a replacement for Rosie?  Rocket (SHE chose that name, I believe in deep appreciation for Rocket Dog) is not Rosie - she's a whole 'nother dog to love. Whenever we go for a even a short walk, when we get home Rocket bursts at full gallop into the house. I think every time she is overjoyed to be coming HOME again, every time as good as it gets.  We both send big love and thanks to Rocket Dog - I think maybe you saved us both!

Pepper

Pepper (formerly JoJo) has been such a good dog and great addition to our family. He has adjusted well to his new home and is just a lovable little thing! We go for lots of walks and visits to the local dog park. As you can see by the pictures attached he is anxiously awaiting Christmas!! Thank you for rescuing Pepper as he is so deserving of a second chance as are all the other animals you rescue!!

We adopted "Charlet" now known as "JoJo"from Rocket Dog Rescue over 2 years ago in front of Zephyr Realty on 24th Street. Our lives have never been the same since that day.

My boyfriend Ron, and I were strolling down the street to grab some lunch, when all of a sudden, this bolt of energy jumped up to try to catch a fly...and I think she got-em! We both looked at each other and asked Pali, is this dog for adoption? She shot us a smile and walked us over to fill out the forms and knew we were the right parents for our JoJo. Ron and I knew she was the one special canine that would fill our lives with laughs, headaches, happiness, lots of barking at first, but unconditional love that could never be replaced by any dollar amount in the world. Pali encouraged us to take JoJo for a walk down the block for a "test drive", and it was that first walk that made us fall in love with that sassy Toy Fox Terrier. She took one look at a passing bird flying by and went for it, jumped up to bite it, all four paws catching air, and landed gracefully, but no bird.....a wagging tail with that big black spot on her back, all in tact and happy to be with her new parents.....we thank you Rocket Dog Rescue and Pali for our JoJo!!!

Tallulah

I saw updates about other Rocket Dog pups on your web site so I thought I’d let you know how Tallulah (renamed from Valentine) is doing. I’ve attached a photo for you to check out.

I adopted her in February 2003, when she was about 11 weeks old and weighed in at about 12 pounds of wriggly love. She quickly grew up to a 70-pound sweetie who loves her neighbor dogs: Fred, a basset hound; Spot, a border collie mix, and Tuesday, a Newfoundland. Her brother, Oliver, also a RocketDog, was adopted by a family in my neighborhood, so they get together sometimes and wag their stumpy docked tails together.

She loves Greenies, stalking squirrels, snuggling on the bed, destroying squeaky toys, protecting the yard from kitties, visiting The Other Place in Boonville, and chasing tennis balls (this is good for hours – literally – of fun).

Tallulah, also known as Wiggly Butt, Stumpy, and Roo-Roo, is the light of my life. Thanks for all your hard work with the pups.

Little Girl (Sadie)

It all started 20 years ago…I was with my best friend in Mexico for 10 days and pseudo adopted a stray dog. We named him Killer and he followed us everywhere and became our buddy. When the time came to go back to California, my parents would not let me take Killer back with me. I cannot tell you how heartbroken I was and how often I thought about him. I still have not forgiven my parents for this.

20 years later, I am sitting in Marina Pet Hospital with my dog Butler who is sick with Cushing’s disease. I meet Valerie from Rocket Dog and she tells me about her organization and this dog “Little Girl” is lead out of the back room and comes right to me and lays her head on my knee. It was amazing because she looked just like long lost Killer. My heart sank and I thought this dog was the cutest thing ever. Unfortunately, I had two dogs at home and knew I could not have a third. Little Girl went on to her foster home.

2 months later, my loving dog of 11 years, Butler passes away at Marina Pet Hospital. I am devastated and cannot function. 20 days later, I call Pali and ask her if Little Girl is still available. She informs me that she was adopted but returned and is housed in a kennel because they have no foster homes. I take delivery of her a few days later for a trial weekend run and after that weekend, I have signed the adoption papers.

That was Memorial Day weekend last year and I cannot explain to you how my life has changed. She has been renamed to Sadie and has become my best friend. We went to obedience school and came out with flying colors after working to control her barking from being frightened. Who knows what happened to her before being rescued, but it was not good. She has progressed every day and has turned out to be a wonderful dog. Her favorite activity is going to the dog park to play with her two other Rocket Dog buddies. Sadie is so ever grateful to Pali and Rocket Dog Rescue as well as Butler for making a space for her. I thank Pali and Rocket Dog Rescue for bringing this wonderful dog into my life and doing what they do best.)

 

Nellie

I adopted Nellie in January of 2006 and she is such a smart - sweet - exceptionally wonderful doggie! She graduated from Perfect Paws School and is very good at coming and at 'down' - maybe a little more work on not chasing garbage trucks. We play alot at alamo square and duboce park except her favorite is fort funston. Thank you Rocketdog for doing what you do! We are a very happy duo!

Dear Pali and RDR folks, just wanted to send along a photo of the wonderful Chica dog (now becoming known as Dinah). She is taking to dog classes remarkably well. She is affectionate and attentive and is really loving her new routine and home here with us. What a gem she is (a direct quote from the dog trainer). She makes us very proud. Thank you for rescuing her and caring for her until we could meet.

Poppy

Last July on a beautiful Sunday morning, my partner, Bob and I were down in the Castro doing our usual grocery shopping, etc....when we noticed the Rocket Dog Rescue Adoption booth on 18 & Castro Streets. It was ironic because we were just at the SPCA the day before and unfortunately we did not feel we would have been a match for any of the many wonderful dogs up for adoption.

We immediately fell in LOVE with little "POPPA", (he told us he wanted to be called "POPPY") but were told that someone already had adopted him, but.....that the adoption would not be final unless the prospective parents were there to pick him up by 3:00 pm. We walked towards the car with such heavy hearts. I literally prayed to God to please let those other people have a change of heart and allow that beautiful little creature to come home with us, and become a part of our family. Well...3:00 pm rolled around and sure enough...POPPY was ours!!!!!!!

However, our happiness was short-lived. Two weeks after we brought POPPY home our landlord served us with a 3-day notice to Cure or Quit (Basically, this means to get rid of your Dog or face eviction). We were both flabbergasted!!! Mainly because of the fact that Bob was allowed to have a dog in the same building from 1996 until MAX passed away in 2002. I remember looking at little POPPY playing happily with his little POSTMAN stuffed animal and I burst into tears! I decided right then and there that no one was going to take him away from us!! NO WAY, NO HOW!!!!

Well, with pereserverance, prayer, and some help from Molly Stafford at The AIDS Legal Referral Panel, and PAWZ, we were able to keep our beloved POPPY, and remain in our apartment.!!! I cannot begin to tell you how much happiness and joy POPPY has brought into our lives!!! We're a Family now!!!

Thank You, Rocket Dog Rescue, for allowing us to adopt POPPY and for all that you do in making a difference in people's lives!!!

Biscuit

We are so in love with our newest member of our family. This is Biscuit (formerly Teddy) after his grooming session..isn't he handsome?! He is an absolute delight..you can't help but smile and feel good when he is around! His little tail never stops wagging. He has adjusted so well..our cats are even happy to have a new friend! We are so touched by all the love and care Rocket Dog Rescue gives to the wonderful dogs they work so hard to find good homes for...we so admire and are so grateful there are people like you helping these wonderful dogs we are the lucky ones, too!!

Ok, so we were not very successful "foster" parents. We adopted the only 2 dogs we ever tried to foster! Jolie (Avalon) and Mamie have been with us since June 2004. They bring us so much love & joy. In return we try to maximize the good times in their lives - our bed is theirs (as are the 3 other dog beds littering our bedroom floor plus the "day bed" in the hall) and they rule the weekends. They've become quite the hikers and backpackers. This picture was taken at the sun's rising in Death Valley, CA.

We love, love, love these girls and are so very thankful to Pali (who the hell would save a pregnant pit bull and a 12 year old incontinent doberman?) to whom there is no such thing as a throw-away dog.

I adopted Rodeo about a year ago from you guys and I just wanted to say thank you. He is the light of my life, he truly is my best friend. He follows me everywhere I go and he's such a good dog, everyone loves him especially children. Otto... AKA Bailey to us. He has been the best, happiest, most energetic dog since we took him home almost a year ago. We live across from the beach so he gets to run around as often as he likes......and as you can see goes to sleep right after. We've all been having a blast.

MoonPie

MoonPie, formerly Muneco, stole our hearts the moment we saw him on the Rocket Dog website. We had concerns as he was 120 lbs. and we had small children but after speaking with Pali and then meeting him we knew we had found the perfect dog. He looked like a polar bear walking down the street when Pali brought him to us. We brought him home and he slept on top of all three children in the van all the way back to Sacramento that night. He has such a sweet personality and gentle nature we are just in love! We are guilty of spoiling him and let him sleep in bed with us under the covers. He of course has his own pillow. He loves eating everything but especially bread - we have to be careful where we leave it because he can't seem to resist it. He is definately not an Atkins dog! We are lucky enough to work at home and so we're able to spend most all of our time with him. He seems to know he was rescued and appreciates us as much as we do him. We have a vet who lives down the street who provides all of his medical care and is in love with him! He had sores on his belly when we got him that had been biopsied and treated. We were relieved to find out it wasn't cancer but concerned that the sores wouldn't go away ~ we tried EVERYTHING! Diet, medication, dermatologists, endless vets. No one could really figure out what had caused the sores. So our vet from down the street came over and gave us these reall awful smelling drops that were an anti inflamatory medication. We had tried others but had no luck. It turns out these drops tasted so bad he stopped licking the area and within a couple of months he was totally cleared up! He hasn't had a repeat of the sores since and it has been almost a year! He really has been a treasure and we are forever grateful to Rocket Dog Rescue and all the selfless work they do for our canine friends. Love, Jenny, Chris, Whitney, Brea, Carson and Moon Pie!

You saved my life last year and now my life is a doggie dream come true! I am so happy right now and I wanted to say thank you for the work you do for all the dogs like me. I live a quiet, happy life in a comfy safe home. My companion takes me on at least 2 long walks a day, and I adore my new vegetarian diet. We both love chocolate and peanut butter (although I only eat the stuff made just for dogs). I was tired and stressed when I got here, but now I feel like a puppy again. The vet calls my companion a 'miracle worker,' but all I really needed was to be saved. I owe it all to the Rocket Dog crew. Turns out I am totally house trained and very friendly to other humans, especially children. Someday I hope to come by one of the mobile adoptions. In the meantime, just wanted to let you know how I am.

LEX WILL BE IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER
Hi Pali, It was good talking to you today. I wish it was under different circumstances. So sorry to break the news to you over the sudden death of our furry little angel, Lex. He died in his sleep. We had a little funeral for him. He is buried in our rose garden where he always loved to explore when he was still alive. He was the king of our home and of our garden. He chased every squirrrel, bird, butterfly and even wasps and bees that came near his garden. He followed me around the house and the yard poking his little nose into everything that I did. We gave him a nickname of "pokey face" and he seemed to love whenever we'd call him that. He was very protective of us and barked like a big dog whenever he heard someone at the door. He never failed to greet me at the door each time I came home from work. When I went to Asia on a business trip, my dad housesat and took care of Lex for two weeks while I was gone. Then my dad had the flu and was feeling really weak; my dad told me that Lex never left his side while he was ill and was licking my dad's wrist as his way of making my dad feel better. And when my dad went to the bathroom at night, Lex stood outside the door and waited for my dad to make sure he was okay. What a sweetheart! We loved him so very much. And are missing him a lot. He was a loving dog who couldn't do enough to make everyone happy around him. He was gentle and sweet and very obedient and also full of mischief at times. And if he didn't know you or not familiar with your smell because he was blind, he would aim for your bottom and try to snip it until he got comfortable around you and knew that you were not a danger to him and his household. I want to thank you for bringing him into our lives. He came at a time when we were mourning over the loss of our dachshund which we'd had for seven years. Lex helped us heal our hearts over our loss of our other furry little angel, Fletcher, which was also a rescue dog that we adopted when we lived in Dallas. Steve (formally known as Jaws) came into our lives very unexpectedly...we were going to have breakfast on 24th Street and walked away with a new love. Ever since that day, he has been the light of our lives.

He's so smart and playful -- he loves to sit with us on the couch and go on walks. He loves to snuggle when he sleeps and makes the cutest noises when he's first waking up in the morning! He was even on the CBS 11 pm news on June 17th -- they were doing a story about pitt bulls, and Steve was the star of the story!

We can't imagine a life without him now and are so thankful that we found him and Rocket Dog!!

Seamus

We are so pleased to have Seamus (formerly Harry) as a member of our family. Joe and I had been looking for a rescue dog for about a month when we came across Seamus. We had seen many dogs but no single dog seemed to posses all the qualities we were looking for… until we met Rocket Dog Rescue volunteer Tara and her foster dog “Harry.” Joe and I were so impressed with Seamus’s personality and obedience skills. It was obvious how much Tara loved Seamus and how much work she had put into training him. Joe and I chose to rename “Harry” as “Seamus” in honor of his Irish foster parents and for his red coat. He quickly learned his new name and made himself at home in our house. Seamus continues to learn new commands and is currently working on “leave it” with the squirrels and deer near our home. He’s a fabulous dog and is constantly getting compliments for his good behavior and handsome face.

Joker

It has been about 7 months since Henry (once known as Joker) decided he wanted to live with us. It took Henry some time to know that he is safe, as it is the belief of many he suffered abuse before Pali saved him. However, it did not take Henry long to form relationships with the cats he now shares his home with. We continue to work with Henry around his fears of dogs and men, but he has managed to make friends with three dogs in the neighborhood, and he will be graduating from Growly Dog class next week. Henry has also formed a bond with my fiance and is friendly to other men that he knows he can trust. It doesn't matter to us how much time Henry needs until he knows that no one will ever hurt him again, and we never question the decision made to adopt him. Henry has brought more joy and love to our home, and reminded us about the importance of patience and trust. Thank you so much, Rocket Dog, and especially Pali for allowing us to bring Henry into our lives.

William

My wife had been bugging me for a dog for about six years. She sent many, many pictures of different dogs via email, but when I saw William, I knew he’d be our dog. And that he was a great dog. And I was right. The first day we met him we could tell that he was both sweet and smart, and we loved him immediately. The first night in our home, he snuggled us in bed and quickly became a very spoiled and beloved member of our family. I just told a co-worker five minutes ago that meeting William was the best twist of fate that I’ve ever experienced, right up there with meeting my wife. We spend a lot of time walking and playing with him, and his unconditional love reminds us both of what’s important every day. We are very grateful to Rocket Dog for their assistance, kindness, expertise and professionalism in saving William’s life, and for finding him a home where he will always get the life and love every pet deserves.

Quickly

Coffee is doing great. She was renamed "Mistress Quickly" after a character in Henry IV, parts 1 & 2. We call her "Quickly" for short.

Quickly finished Bob Guiterrez's Basic Dog Obedience class with flying colors, and we look forward to more classes. She is doing great on leash and off. She has been super quick in learning the rules of the house - hence her name.

She is quite a wiggly dog, very cute and funny. She wags her tail constantly and is very generous with the kisses.

She and our other dog Portia are quite the pair. Quickly follows her everywhere. We have become those crazy dog people you hear about, who plan their lives around the puppies in the house. Sound familiar?

Every once in a while we will run into someone from Rocket Dog who remembers her, which is nice. Another treat is running into "Joey" who was another Rocket Dog that Quickly remembers. He and she romp. If only we could find where "Maddie" & "Noodles" play.

Hi there! Mya is doing great!! She's very full of energy and driving all of us a little crazy at times, but we really love her!! She's getting along really well with my other 3 dogs, but we always crate her when we are gone for her own safety. She still sometimes likes to try to pick fights with our boy dogs. Mostly they all play though!! She's even got our older grumpy Rottweiler to play with her!!

Lucky for us we had brunch on 24th Street when Rocket Dog Rescue was out with their "Doogies." We hadn't planned on getting a second dog, but the little face of one of the pooches they had just captured my heart. My husband stood by, arms across his chest, "We're NOT getting another dog." Brunch passed quickly and I beelined for Rocket Dog Rescue across the street. How could I leave that little face behind? After spending a few minutes with "Eloise" now named Bika, my husband was happily filling out an adoption application. Bika has that ability. When we first got her home the first night she was so scared to go up the stairs to our flat. Our other dog Kojo coached her and took her under his paw, and by the next day she was doing everything he was doing. The first night my husband, Paul, was laying on the bed reading and Bika was in the kitchen with me. All of a sudden she ran out in a dead run full bore to the bedroom to jump on the bed and lick Paul all over the face as if to say Thank YOU, I'm home! She is the most beautiful dog, we think she is a cross between Rhodesian Ridgeback and Viszla with a gorgeous red coat, black spotted pink tongue and kohl rimmed eyes. We just ADORE her and so does Kojo, our German Shorthaired Pointer. We only wish we could have sheltered her from whatever sorrows she had as a pup and are so grateful to Pali for getting her out of a shelter and into our hearts and arms. We have never had a dog be more grateful and loving. She has such good karma, even our best friends want to reincarnate as one of our dogs. Pali, thank you for all the great work you are doing. Dear Friends:
(Chaim) Bingo Green was adopted from Rocket Dog Rescue by our family on April 16, 2005. He had been abused and homeless for most of his 9 or 10 years. All we knew is that someone named him "Bingo"... Our other dog is "Libbye Bingo Green", named for my Aunt Libbye who LOVED (was addicted to?) playing Bingo. Coincidence? I dunno. But Bingo is doing fine here with us as evidenced by this photo. Pony/Rey

Hello, all. I was sending this email to update you on Rey's successful adoption. Rey has been renamed Pony. Ponyboy Curtis is his full name; he has been named after my favorite fictional character. Pony is doing great adapting to his new environment. He is the uder cuddle dog and loves stuffed animals. Surprisingly enough, he has very strong legs that allow him to jump pretty high. He has met all the dogs that I know and seems to get along well. I have found a dog park in foster city that caters to smaller dogs, so we will be paying a visit to the park soon. He is very energetic, loving, smart, and most of all, damn cute. I want to thank you for doing the work that you ALL do. I found my adoption experience to be a good one. Pony is a very well behaved boy and I owe that to those who fostered him.

So many of my friends have now come to the conclusion that he will, and already is, just as spoiled with all the finer things in life as I was known to do with my other little guy. One friend said to him the other day "you" sure are a lucky guy to have found him. I said to him "no, I’m the lucky one."

Zippy

Zippy has been renamed Rocky. With his attitude it fits him to a tee. I was visiting San Francisco for two weeks. My beloved 13 year old Lhasa-poo "Chata" had died a little over a month before. I knew I was ready to open my heart again. My friend and I called Rocket Dog and I met and fell in love with Zippy. He became Rocky that night. He was an angel on the plane ride home to Washington (riding in his little Sherpa carrier with me) and has quickly become a member of our family. He is learning to trust us and himself again. He loves our walks on the beach and gets along great with my partner and his new "big" brother Scooter. Attached is a picture of Rocky, Scooter and Richard at the beach today. With all this exercise, Rockys few extra pounds should disappear soon. He is a joy.

Louie

Just an update, Louie is wonderful of course. We had a personal lesson with a trainer, and he walks SO much better on a leash, and he doesn't jump as much, and doesn't bite when we play. He is fabulous, and he listens so well when I tell him to leave the kitties alone. He loves his sister, Maggie, and they play every day. I couldn't imagine another dog living with us now--we love him so much. Here are some pictures for you, mostly with my fiancee, Matt, and with Maggie. Actually we just took them up to Tahoe last weekend, and Louie was so funny in the snow. He is just so great around all people, and other dogs too. I think he could win a vertical contest with how high he jumps! He's crazy, but so funny and so cute. And his head doesn't look so big now because he has gained a little weight, just so he's filled out.

Maggie

We had been wanting a dog for some time, but we also have two cats. So, we thought that fostering a dog would be a good way to test out the relationship to make sure everyone was happy (and we'd be helping a dog in need at the same time!).

As soon as we saw Maggie, we were in love. She is exactly the kind of girl we imagined we might end up with - a scruffy little sweetheart with an attitude. Within a day of having her, I knew I'd never be able to give her up! Fortunately, the cats love her too - they play, and even snuggle.

Slowly but surely she is learning to trust strangers and dogs she doesn't know. And, the more comfortable she gets, the more her personality blossoms (and the more fun she has). Now I can't imagine being without her!

I am SO grateful, and thankful every day that Rocket Dog saved her from being euthanized. She loves life, and we love her! Livia McRee & Biz Stone

Josephine

Up until Spring of this year, I'd been dreaming of adopting a dog, but kept thinking about all the reasons it wouldn't work out in my small apartment. When I sat down with Josephine (then Becca Star) at the Castro & 18th St. adoption fair in April and she promptly curled up in my lap and fell asleep, my thinking shifted to figuring out how I could bring her home and make it work out. And it has, beyond my wildest expectations!

Josephine (named for my father, who passed away recently) happily co-exists with my three cats. Josephine is mellow, social, gentle and loving, and I am very grateful to Rocket Dog Rescue for saving her, and to volunteer Carol Sarner for fostering her. Corny as it sound, JoJo has changed my life for the better.

Just so you know, Josephine loves to fetch, chew, camp, swim, and most of all, she loves to get belly rubs.
